20 Oct 08 Components of a Telephone Set

All telephones contain the same basic components, which are Microphone or Transmitter, Speaker or Receiver, Hybrid Coil, Balancing Network, Switch-hook, Ringer (Bell) and Dialing Mechanism. The handset has both the transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter is a microphone that converts sound into electrical signals. The receiver is a speaker that converts electrical signals into sound. The telephone handset uses four wires. Two wires go to the transmitter and two go to the receiver. However, the telephone line to the local exchange has only two wires. To make this conversion of four wires into two, the hybrid coil is used. It is an arrangement of transformers specifically designed to do the conversion. The balancing network allows some of the transmitted sound to pass into the receiver which helps in reducing the echo.
